32000 MW swing in demand in 20 minutes; Grid managers perfectly managed.

New Delhi: [India]

Engineers at Load Dispatch Centres [LDC] across the country managed a demand dip  and rise of about 32 GW between 8.49 PM and 9.09 PM,[Indian Standard Time] on Sunday the 5th April,2020, which was much beyond the forecast of the power sector experts . The demand in Power was a reaction to the request of Prime Minister of India to switch off lights and lighting candles to articulate nation’s solidarity and support for the fight against COVID-19 epidemic. Also this has acted as a support to those devoid of any break rendering service against social spreading of the disease.Load Dispatch Centres are  responsible for carrying out real time operation for grid control and despatch of electricity within the State/country through secure and economic operation of the Grid in accordance with the Grid standards and Code.

Demand in the Grid has come down by 32000 MW in ew minutes but the frequency and voltage were maintained within the standard range. Demand went down from 1,17,300 Megawatts at 20:49 hrs to 85300 Megawatts till 21:09 hrs; then it in progress increased. Frequency was maintained within a range of 49.7 to 50. 26 Hz, which means the voltage, was kept stable. The national grid operator of India   POSOCO [Power System Operation Corporation Limited] and the national, regional and state load dispatch centres did the job like trapezium managers with cooperation from all generators; NTPC Ltd, NHPC Ltd, NEEPCO[North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited ], THDC India Ltd, SJVNL ltd, BBMB[Bhakra Beas Management Board], all state owned generating stations and Independent Power Producers, Transmission and Distribution companies worked as a team.

The national power grid was equipped for the fall in demand and has been steadily balancing down thermal power generation in ranking since 7.30 PM. In sequence, power generation from gas-based and hydel generation units were being scaled up to sustain the balance. At 9 PM Hydro power station was generating around 23.9 GW which was scaled down to half within three minutes to 12.22 GW when overall demand dipped as lights were switched off. Hydel power generation has one of the highest flexibilities of scaling down or up within a short time and engineers availed the litheness. Needless to say, Renewable power generations were also reduced by half by 9.10 PM.  When publics started switching on electrical appliances, demand started to rise, thermal, hydel and gas-based generation was steadily put into service to meet the ascending demand. Hydro power station and gas-based power generation were quickly increased to maintain grid balance, thermal power stations were synchronized slowly. At 9 PM [IST] demand was 114,456 MW  and it came down  to just 88,759 MW within ten minutes time  and  again started to rise to about  111,040 MW within 10-15 minutes time
