Not paying for electricity is theft, says the Mayor of Johannesburg mayor when the utility found that residents are enjoying free electricity by performing Power theft. Power utilities are concerned about the menace of theft, a cancer of society. There are many ways for performing irregularities to electrical connections. illegal connections, meter by-passing, and customers buying electricity from ghost vendors.
In the past eight months, Eskom has lost revenue of approximately 6 million USD in one area alone, where customers’ buying trends are dispiritingly low since their change from post-paid to prepaid meters; which were installed to support better control of their electricity consumption and to Curb Power Theft
