Electrocution While Fishing Highlights Dangers of Power Theft in Kerala

An adventure turned fatal in Paakkad district—home to Kerala’s Electricity Minister—when a 33-year-old youth from Vandazhi was electrocuted while fishing in a Chittilanchery stream near Nenmara. He and his friends illegally tapped an overhead power line, running a live wire into the water to stun fish. One stepped into the electrified zone, leading to his instant death. Police arrested the duo.

Remote cross-country lines enable such undetected thefts for illegal fishing and wild boar trapping, claiming dozens of lives yearly. Farmers misuse electric fencing for crops, while organised groups sell boar meat. A recent Vaniyambalam case saw a 65-year-old woman burned by her son’s trap wire.

Electricity theft is illegal, deadly, and anti-social. Vigilant citizens, local bodies, KSEB, and police must collaborate to end it—no second chances for “adventurers.”
