theft invites imprisonment and fine in India. Delhi electricity sector is privatized;
still the commodity is stolen.The aggregate technical and commercial losses have
fallen from a higher value of 55 per
cent to 10-12 per cent currently. This figure when converted to actual shows
millions of Indian Rupees. It is estimated that the annual loss due to Power
Theft in Delhi is around 50-60 Million US Dollar, with localities in North,
West, East and Central Delhi contribute more. The Delhi government has sought
the assistance of Central Industrial Security Force [CISF] a central armed force under the Ministry of
Home Affairs ,Government of India to control Power Theft. During those periods,
the rate of theft and loss has come down drastically. But these forces have to
be deployed for maintaining law and order in the country and naturally the
power sector and detection of Power theft has become a minor agenda for policy makers.
It is well known that more than 1% of GDP is list by way of power theft, but no
fruitful action to bring the culprit to book is seen in yesteryears.
