While electricity theft is common in Mumbra, it turned violent on Wednesday when a resident of Mumbra tried to strangle an employee of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) on being asked to pay his electricity bill of Rs 1,500. The officials caught the accused stealing electricity who then turned violent on being questioned. He was arrested and later sent to jail.
As part of their monthly visit, officers from MSEDCL were in the Mumbra Devi Road area on April 11 around noon to intimate residents of their electricity dues.
Around 12.30 pm, they reached the house at Manenagar in Mumbra. “He pays his bills regularly but this time he had failed to pay the dues for March,” said a police officer from Mumbra police station. “They asked Karjgi to pay the dues and when they went to the meter cabin, the officials saw an illegal wire connection attached to his meter,” added the police officer.
The MSEDCL employees deducted that the resident was doing electricity theft. When they tried to take a picture of the meter on their mobile cameras, one man , attacked them. “He abused them verbally and tried to beat them up. In the scuffle, he caught Karim’s neck and tried to strangle him,” said the police officer.
They lodged a complaint at police station under sections 353 (criminal force to deter public servant from duty), 504 (breach of peace) of the Indian penal code and Maharashtra electricity act, 2003. He was arrested by the police immediately and produced in Thane court on Thursday which remanded him to judicial custody.[Courtesy:DNA]
