power theft

Privatised, still, electricity is stolen.

The common man’s life in Mumbai is becoming more difficult as the temperature rises. Not everyone can afford an air conditioner, and even if they can, how many will be able to keep up with the current charge during the post-Covid period?

Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML), a private company, is totally responsible for power distribution in the Siddharth Colony in Mumbai. They proceed to disconnect defaulted customers and have booked nearly 200 people for alleged power theft. As the mercury levels rise, many people are left with no choice but to commit power theft. The majority of the colony’s 3000 or so electricity customers have been defaulters for the past two decades, accumulating 100 INR (13 Million USD)in arrears. They claim that Discom has offered them to pay their electricity bills since June 2019, which they claim is unaffordable. Despite consumer tensions, intimidation, hartals, responsive pleas, and the burdens of political interference, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited is determined to collect electricity dues.

Electricity is a key variable without which life cannot be moved on, especially for city dwellers. The chaotic situation in Mumbai’s Siddharth Colony is not the result of inefficiency for a few days, but for a long time. Did the utility function properly for such a long time? Because it used to be in the hands of the Government, there was no obligation on the part of the consumer to pay the electricity charges, nor on the part of the concerned officials to collect. When the management changes, the attitude and approach change radically. Officials were unable to collect even half of the charge for the electricity supplied, resulting in a 50% loss.

There were various political ruling parties in the state of Maharashtra. They competed to provide free electricity to people and used it as a vote bank. Hypocritical democracy has triumphed, and the country’s overall progress has been thwarted. In such a situation, the country requires a statesman rather than a politician. With this colony’s large receivables, 100 million poor people could be fed all at one time. Poverty, India’s most serious social problem, can be mitigated to some degree if power theft is avoided. Residents of the Colony claim they have been harassed as a result of developers’ deception. What does it mean to complain that “we are harassed” after decades of unproductive approaches?
