Revenue decline: MSPDCL fears power theft

MSPDCL is experiencing a revenue decline due to unauthorized usage, despite 24-hour electricity supply, and is working on a strategy to prevent power theft

The Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited (MSPDCL) in north-eastern India has noticed a decline in revenue despite implementing a 24-hour electricity supply. The authorities believe that the energy consumed in the state does not align with the usage. This is due to the unauthorized use of electricity through hooking, meter manipulation, meter bypassing, and unauthorized connections. This has resulted in challenges in keeping the power on during peak hours. Load dispatch centre engineers work as trapezium managers during peak hours to prevent blackouts.

The power generators can cut off the supply at times, and the cost of purchasing power is always increasing, which makes the situation worse. The power company has warned its customers against engaging in unauthorized activities like power theft and stated that there will be serious consequences if caught. However, the utility has not thought about its efforts to prevent power theft carefully. The Electricity Act of 2003 empowers the company to look into, check, and bill customers who use electricity without authorization. It remains unclear how successfully the utility can enforce the legislation.(Tamperfinder)
