Electricity theft is a significant issue in distribution systems, affecting the overall management of the system and posing a threat to its stability. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) has been developed to detect and manage this issue. Smart meters, which measure energy consumption, securely communicate this information to utilities, enabling them to collect data on electricity usage from customers. These meters can execute control commands remotely or locally, ensuring the confidentiality of the data. India is currently in the process of installing smart meters to improve efficiency and reduce power theft. By monitoring usage and improving billing and collections, smart meters can help distribution utilities address financial challenges and curb power theft to some extent. There is no specific model for utilities; they have to develop the best approach based on the prevailing situations in the field.
