The vigilance squad of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), Pune, nabbed a person for allegedly fabricating and supplying remote controls that slow down electricity meters by half.
The suspect Madhukar Ajay Chaudhari (31), a resident of Prajakta Nagar, Chinchwad, arrested on Monday, has been sent to police custody till August 17.
The MSEDCL has found around 12 consumers using such remote controls in the Pimpri-Chinchwad region and had launched a drive to find more.
Deputy Director of the Vigilance, Security and Enforcement department of MSEDCL, Pune region, Shivaji Indalkar, said, We received a tip-off from our headquarters in Mumbai about Chaudhari. We had been keeping a close watch on his activities for some days and finally nabbed him. Six flying squads were involved in the case. We first checked the electricity meter at Chaudharis home and found it 50% slower than a normal one. We registered a police complaint against him under the provisions of the Electricity Act of 2003. He had virtually converted one of the four rooms of his house into a factory, with a number of instruments, meters, and such other things.(Courtesy IE)
