Temporary power connections for those living in colonies soon: Panchkula MLA

ASSERTING THAT around 40 per cent of electricity loss is reported in Panchkula every month, local MLA Gian Chand Gupta on Monday said the residents of unauthorised colonies would now be given temporary electricity connections to bring down the power theft figure. This follows the notification issued on August 11 that says the government has decided to release temporary connections to the residents of unauthorised colonies, which had been restricted since 2010. “There are a large number of colony residents who are interested in seeking a temporary connection, but since these colonies are illegal, they cannot get an authorised connection. In such cases, they end up taking illegal electricity connections (kundi connections), leading to electricity thefts,” MLA Gupta told a press conference at HUDA Fields Hotel, Sector 6, here. “As per Uttar Haryana Bijli Vittaran Nigam (UHBVN), Panchkula reports an electricity loss of 40 per cent every month, largely from colonies. But with the implementation of the recent notification, we will able to bring down the number.” As per the notification, a resident will have to submit an affidavit and an indemnity bond stating that he shall be liable for any legal action regarding his premises by the Local Bodies Department or Town and Country Planning Department concerned. An identity proof will also have to be submitted. However, it has been made clear that the connection will be provided purely on a temporary basis and the consumer with such an electricity connection will not be entitled to any right over the land or property, if any. “The colonies are illegal, and this fact is not being challenged here. We are just providing the basis civic amenities, which is the duty of the government,” the MLA said. The energy meter will be installed on the pole outside the premises through cable, and only single-phase connection will be provided. The colour of the electricity bills for such connections will also be different from that of the bills for the other connections. “All the electricity bills of such consumers will have a detailed disclaimer clearly stating that release of power connection and collection of bills from them does not confer on him/her any occupation or ownership rights on the property concerned and that he/she is simply making a payment for the electricity actually consumed by him/her and nothing more,” said Gupta [IE]
