Jammu and Kashmir Discoms Launch Crackdown on Smart Meter Power Theft Perpetrators.

According to Section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003, engaging in power theft can lead to imprisonment for up to three years, a monetary fine, or both.

Taking a strong stance against the pervasive issue of power theft, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) and Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL), the two Indian Distribution companies have implemented stringent measures to combat those engaging in unlawful tampering with smart meters. These measures include apprehending individuals who illegally break security seals and manipulating internal circuitry to hinder accurate energy recording deliberately. For decades, Jammu and Kashmir’s electricity department has ignored power thieves. The government’s zero-tolerance approach against power theft and smart meter manipulation has imposed a new burden on officials to uncover such crimes.

Smart metres can alert a data centre regarding the opening of an electricity meter on a consumer’s premises. Tampering is possible only after breaching the security seals on the meter and terminals. Following reports from the Project Implementing Agency (PIA) on meter cover-open tamper alarms received digitally, incidents of smart meter tampering have been referred to the appropriate Police Station.

A smart meter serves as a vigilant safeguard against any endeavour to tamper with energy recording, a serious offence constituting pilferage of electricity. Activities such as tampering with meters, using tampered meters, establishing loop connections, or employing any device or method that disrupts the precise registration, calibration, or measurement of the electric current amount to power theft. The public must abstain from such unlawful actions.
