The stormy Indian power sector in summer 2022

It was admitted by authorities that the electricity generation was reduced only marginally due to the coal shortage. If this deficiency was the only problem, then there would be no power restriction for consumers. Although it is serious that many plants have short supply coal stocks, production has not yet been significantly reduced. The electricity supply will be affected only if coal is not available for consumption in the coming days. Those who are already in crisis will be muddled if things move towards it.

The fact is that by 2016 there was a surplus of electricity in India. But since then, the majority of new plants have been added to the network in solar and wind. Sector observers had predicted that the deficit would begin to be felt from the summer of 2020. However, the decline in demand due to Covid-19 continued till June 2021, when the third wave ends. The impression that Surplus electricity continues is false. But in July 2021, when India set an all-time record for electricity consumption, it became clear that demand was coming back. The crisis erupted in September-October. The crisis, which had been lurking during the winter, intensified in March. It is clear that this will continue for a few years. It is not just a theory that deficit and overproduction disorder are cyclical in a market economy. Even without the Surplus, it is made to believe that there was sufficient electricity availability. It seemed so because demand was low. (Tamperfinder)
